Starting off Promenade Opera Project's 2020 Season: Voices of Change, we dedicate this concert to the revolutionary Kurt Weill. With a breadth of repertoire that bridges popular, musical theatre, and opera works as well as a bold sense of protest and justice woven into his pieces, tonight we explore some of his most well-known pieces for the stage. Street Scene was meant to be "an American Opera" according to Kurt Weill, one that truly captured the native sounds of American composition in the early 20th century drawing on the aesthetics of jazz, musical theatre, and opera. Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is a pointed political satire that plays on the themes of corrupt capitalism, sexuality, and broken systems of justice. Knickerbocker Holiday is a musical that gave the world memorable and timeless tunes, like 'September Song', that made their way into the hearts of the public through massive film and radio notoriety. We hope you enjoy this program and tribute to Kurt Weill, a composer who was not afraid to speak up for his people, for his own unique and varied artistic voice, and against the injustices he faced in his German homeland.
